Ayat al-Kursi

The Verse of the Throne -

📿 1 Mighty Verse 📖 Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 255 ✨ The Greatest Verse

🌟 What Makes Ayat al-Kursi So Special?

Ayat al-Kursi is one single verse — but Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told us it is the greatest verse in the whole Quran! It lives inside Surah Al-Baqarah, the longest surah, as verse number 255.

The word "Kursi" means throne or footstool. This verse teaches us how big, how strong, and how amazing Allah is — bigger than the sky, the stars, and everything we can imagine!

It is short enough for a child to memorize, and powerful enough that grown-ups say it every single day.

🛏️ Your Bedtime Superpower

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before going to sleep will have a guardian from Allah watching over them all night long.

So here is a beautiful little habit you can start tonight:

  • 🌙 Before sleeping: say Ayat al-Kursi and feel safe
  • 🌅 After every prayer: say it and earn great reward
  • 🚗 When you feel scared: say it and remember Allah is protecting you

✨ Who Is the Guardian?

There is a famous story about a companion of the Prophet ﷺ named Abu Hurairah. He was guarding the charity food of the Muslims when a thief crept in at night!

Abu Hurairah caught him — but the thief begged to be let go and promised to teach him something useful. He said: "When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi. A protector from Allah will stay with you, and no shaytan will come near you until morning."

The next day the Prophet ﷺ said the thief had told the truth, even though he was a liar — and revealed that the "thief" had been a shaytan all along!

💫 Say it before sleep
💫 Allah sends a guardian

🕌 The Gate to Jannah

It is also reported that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between them and entering Paradise except death. Scholars differ about how strong this particular report is, but reciting the verse after prayer is a beautiful habit either way.

Imagine that — one short verse, five times a day, and Jannah is waiting for you. Isn't Allah so generous?

1

Allahu laa ilaaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom

"Allah — there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all."

There is only One God, and that is Allah. He is Al-Hayy — always alive, He never dies. And He is Al-Qayyum — He takes care of everything, all the time, without ever getting tired!

2

Laa ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa laa nawm

"Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep."

You get sleepy at night, and so does everyone you know. But Allah never gets sleepy and never sleeps. While you are dreaming, Allah is still watching over you and the whole universe!

3

Lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maa fil-ard

"To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth."

Every star, every ocean, every mountain, every ant, and every single one of us — everything belongs to Allah. He made it all and He owns it all.

4

Man dhal-ladhee yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnih

"Who is there that can intercede with Him except by His permission?"

On the Day of Judgment, nobody can speak up for anybody else unless Allah allows it first. Allah is the King, and nothing at all happens without His permission.

5

"He knows what is before them and what is behind them."

Allah knows your past, your present, and your future — all at once! He knows what you did yesterday and what will happen tomorrow. Nothing is ever hidden from Allah.

6

Wa laa yuheetoona bi-shay'im-min 'ilmihi illa bimaa shaa'

"And they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills."

We only know the little bit that Allah teaches us. Think of everything you have learned in school — that is like one tiny drop compared to the giant ocean of Allah's knowledge!

7

Wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal-ard

"His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth."

This is the part the verse is named after! Allah's Kursi is so enormous that the heavens and the earth fit inside it. Our whole planet, the sun, and every galaxy — Allah is greater than all of it.

8

"And their protection does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great."

Looking after the entire universe is never hard work for Allah. He is Al-'Ali (the Most High) and Al-'Adheem (the Most Great). What a beautiful way to finish the verse!
