Surah Al-Fatiha

The Opening -

📿 7 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 🤲 Recited in Every Prayer

🌟 Why is Surah Al-Fatiha Special?

Surah Al-Fatiha is the very first chapter of the Holy Quran. The meaning of "Fatiha" is "The Opening" - so this is the opening of the Quran!

Muslims recite this beautiful surah in every single rakah (unit) of prayer - that means we say it at least 17 times every day in our five daily prayers!

This surah also summarizes the whole Quran, so it's also called "Umm Al-Quran" (The Mother of the Quran)!

📿 A Beautiful Prayer (Dua)

Surah Fatiha is a very beautiful Dua! In this surah, we are asking Allah to show us the right path. And Allah gave us the whole Quran as the answer, so we can stay on the right path!

Allah divided this surah into two parts:

  • 🌙 First part: For Allah - where we praise and admire His power
  • 🤲 Second part: For us - where we ask help from the One and Only God

✨ The Special Light from Heaven

One day, Angel Jibril (AS) was with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They heard a loud noise from the sky and saw that one of the doors of heaven was opened - which was never opened before!

An angel came from that door and gave the Prophet ﷺ good news about two special lights. Allah gave these lights to Muhammad ﷺ as a gift which no other prophet received before:

🩺 The Healing Power

Once, a group of Sahaba (companions) were on a journey. A servant came to them saying that the leader of that area became very sick because he was poisoned. She was asking for help.

One Sahaba went to the leader and recited Surah Al-Fatiha. With Allah's blessing, the leader's health improved! The chief was so happy that he gave 30 sheep and lots of milk to the Sahabas!

1

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

In Surah Al-Fatiha the Bismillah is counted as the first verse. We begin with Allah's name, and we remember two of His most beautiful names: Ar-Rahman, whose mercy reaches everyone, and Ar-Raheem, who is especially merciful to those who believe.

2

Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil 'aalameen

"All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds"

We start by thanking and praising Allah for everything! He is the Lord of all creation - humans, animals, angels, and everything in the universe!

3

Ar-Rahman ir-Raheem

"The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

Allah has so much mercy and love for us! Ar-Rahman means His mercy covers everyone, and Ar-Raheem means He has special mercy for those who believe in Him.

4

Maaliki yawmid-deen

"Master of the Day of Judgment"

Allah is the King and Owner of the Day of Judgment - the day when everyone will be rewarded for their good deeds. This reminds us to always do good!

5

Iyyaaka na'budu wa iyyaaka nasta'een

"You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help"

This is our promise to Allah! We worship only Him and ask only Him for help. Whenever you need something, remember to ask Allah first!

6

Ihdinas-siraatal mustaqeem

"Guide us to the straight path"

We ask Allah to guide us to the right way of living - being kind, honest, and following Islam. It's like asking for directions to Jannah!

7

Siratal ladheena an'amta 'alaihim, ghayril maghdoobi 'alaihim wa lad-dalleen

"The path of those You have blessed, not of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray"

We ask Allah for the path of good people — the path of the prophets and the truthful. Then we ask Him to keep us away from two paths. The first is the path of people who knew the truth and turned away from it. The second is the path of people who got lost and could not find it.
