Tradeoffs & Judgment
Building anything real is a steady stream of tradeoffs — scope, cost, speed, risk, quality. You can rarely have all of them at once. Judgment is the skill of choosing well under those limits.
You Can’t Max Everything
Most build decisions pull against each other. Naming the tension is the first step to choosing on purpose instead of by accident.
- Scope vs. time — more features means a later finish
- Cost vs. capability — more power usually costs more
- Speed vs. quality — shipping fast can mean rougher edges
- Simple vs. flexible — flexibility adds complexity to carry
Impact & Reversibility
Two questions sort most decisions: how much does this matter, and how hard is it to undo?
Most Value, Soonest
You will always have more ideas than time. Rank ruthlessly by value delivered, and let the rest wait.
- Build first what delivers the most value soonest
- Defer the nice-to-haves — they can come later
- Cut what does not serve the goal, without guilt
- Revisit the list as you learn what actually matters
The Call Is Yours
Use GenAI to surface the options — ask it to lay out the tradeoffs, list what you might be missing, and argue both sides. But the model does not own your goal or your risk.
Build It
How to implement: for your capstone, write down the ONE tradeoff you are most unsure about and the call you are making — plus a single sentence of why.
- Weekly AI Tasks tracker — the big tradeoff is LLM cost vs. quality: a cheaper model may parse your messages worse. Decide, then measure it (Modules 8–9).
- Personal brand site — polish vs. ship: a clean, true, live site beats an unfinished perfect one.
What you learned
Building is a stream of tradeoffs; name the tension, decide by impact and reversibility, prioritize the most value soonest, and keep the judgment yours — AI surfaces options, you own the goal.
