Surah Al-Falaq

The Daybreak -

📿 5 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 🛡️ A Surah of Protection

🌟 Why is Surah Al-Falaq Special?

Surah Al-Falaq is chapter number 113 of the Quran, and it has just 5 short verses.

The word "Al-Falaq" means the daybreak — that beautiful moment when the dark night splits open and the morning light comes through.

Think about it: who is strong enough to break the darkness every single morning? Allah! And if Allah can push away the darkness of the whole world, He can certainly keep you safe from anything that scares you.

🛡️ A Little Shield You Can Carry

This surah is a dua for protection. It begins with the words "Qul a'oodhu" — "Say: I seek protection". You are not asking a person, or a lucky charm, or the dark. You are asking Allah, who made everything.

In five short lines you ask Allah to protect you from:

  • 🛡️ Any harm in everything He created
  • 🛡️ The dark night when it settles in
  • 🛡️ People who try to do bad magic
  • 🛡️ Anyone who feels jealous of you

✨ The Two Sister Surahs

Surah Al-Falaq has a twin! It comes right before Surah An-Nas, and the two of them are always mentioned together. People call them Al-Mu'awwidhatayn, which means "the two that give protection".

Al-Falaq asks Allah to protect you from things outside you — the dark, jealousy, harm. An-Nas asks Allah to protect what is inside you — your heart and your thoughts.

Together they are like a shield for your whole self!

🌅 Al-Falaq protects outside
🤍 An-Nas protects inside

🌙 The Prophet's Bedtime Routine

Every night before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ would cup his hands together, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, blow gently into his hands, and then wipe them over his head and body — and he did this three times.

The Prophet ﷺ also told a companion that these two little surahs are the best things anyone can ever seek protection with. Try the routine tonight before you sleep!

1

Qul a'oodhu bi Rabbil-falaq

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak."

"I seek refuge" means "I run to Allah to keep me safe". And who are you running to? The Lord of the daybreak — the One who breaks the dark night apart and brings the morning, every single day.

2

Min sharri ma khalaq

"From the evil of what He created."

This one little line covers everything! You are asking Allah to protect you from any harm in anything He made — big or small, near or far. Nothing is left out.

3

Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab

"And from the evil of the darkness when it settles."

Does the dark ever feel a bit scary at bedtime? Allah knew we would feel that! So He taught us to ask Him for safety when night falls — instead of being afraid. Say this verse and remember: Allah is awake and watching over you.

4

Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad

"And from the evil of those who blow on knots."

Some people long ago tried to hurt others using magic, tying knots and blowing on them. Magic is not allowed in Islam, and it can never beat Allah. Allah is much stronger than any trick anybody tries.

5

Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad

"And from the evil of the envier when he envies."

A "hasid" is someone who is jealous — they see your blessing and wish you did not have it. This verse teaches us two things: ask Allah to protect you from jealousy, and never let jealousy grow in your own heart. When you see something nice, say "MashaAllah!"
