Surah An-Nas

Mankind - الناس

📿 6 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 📖 The Last Surah

🌟 Why is Surah An-Nas Special?

Surah An-Nas is chapter number 114 — the very last surah in the whole Quran! It has 6 short verses.

"An-Nas" means the people, or mankind. That is you, me, and everybody else. The word "nas" appears five times in these six little verses!

Here is something beautiful: the Quran opens with Surah Al-Fatiha, where we ask Allah to guide us — and it closes with Surah An-Nas, where we ask Allah to protect us. Guidance at the start, protection at the end.

👑 Three Names of Allah

Before you ask Allah for anything, this surah teaches you to call Him by three names — and each one is bigger than the last:

  • 💫 Rabb an-Nas — the Lord of people, who made us and takes care of us
  • 💫 Malik an-Nas — the King of people, who is in charge of everyone
  • 💫 Ilah an-Nas — the God of people, the only One we worship

It is like knocking on the door and saying: You made me, You are my King, and You are the only One I worship — please keep me safe!

🤫 The Sneaky Whisperer

This surah protects you from something you cannot even see: whispers. Shaytan cannot force you to do anything at all. He can only whisper little bad ideas into your heart — "go on, tell a lie", "do not share", "skip your salah today".

His special name here is Al-Khannas, which means "the one who sneaks away". As soon as you remember Allah, he shrinks back and runs off — like a mouse when the light switches on!

🌙 The Three Protectors

Every night before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ would cup his hands, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, blow into his hands, and wipe them over his body — three times.

Al-Falaq guards you from harm outside you. An-Nas guards your heart — your thoughts and choices. Together they cover everything!

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

1

Qul a'oodhu bi Rabbin-nas

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind."

"I seek refuge" means "I run to Allah to keep me safe". Allah is your Rabb — the One who created you, feeds you, and looks after you every single day.

2

Malikin-nas

"The King of mankind."

Kings and presidents rule for a little while, over a little piece of land. Allah is the King of every single person, everywhere, forever. Nobody is outside His kingdom.

3

Ilahin-nas

"The God of mankind."

Ilah means the One we worship. Not the sun, not statues, not money — only Allah. This is the greatest name of all three, so it comes last, like the top of a staircase.

4

Min sharril-waswasil-khannas

"From the evil of the sneaking whisperer."

Waswas means whispering and Khannas means the one who sneaks away. He whispers bad ideas — but the moment you remember Allah, he disappears. He has no power over you at all.

5

Alladhi yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-nas

"Who whispers into the hearts of mankind."

The whispers land right in your chest, where your heart is. So if a bad thought pops in, do not panic — it is not your fault, and having the thought is not a sin. Just say "A'oodhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem" and carry on.

6

Minal-jinnati wan-nas

"From among the jinn and mankind."

Bad whispers can come from jinn — creatures we cannot see — but also from people! A friend who says "go on, nobody will know" is whispering too. Choose good friends, and ask Allah to protect you from both kinds.
