Surah Al-Maun

Small Kindnesses -

📿 7 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah ❤️ The Surah of Caring

🌟 Why is Surah Al-Maun Special?

Surah Al-Maun is chapter number 107 of the Quran, with 7 verses.

"Al-Maun" means the small helpful things — everyday bits and pieces people borrow from each other. A cup of sugar. A pen. A bucket. Little things that cost you almost nothing to share.

And that is the whole point of this surah: a person who will not even share the small things has a problem in their heart.

❤️ Believing and Being Kind Go Together

This surah asks a surprising question. It does not ask "who prays?" — it asks "how do you treat people?"

It points at someone who says they believe, but then:

  • 💔 Pushes away the orphan instead of caring for them
  • 💔 Does not care whether hungry people get fed
  • 💔 Is careless and lazy about their salah
  • 💔 Only does good when people are watching
  • 💔 Refuses to lend even small everyday things

Real faith shows up in how you treat people, not just in what you say.

👀 Praying for Show

Here is the part that surprises everybody. The surah says: "woe to those who pray"
Ask your child: Wait — isn't praying a good thing?

Read the next line and it becomes clear: these are people who are heedless about their prayer, and who pray to be seen. They stand up nice and straight when people are watching, and forget all about it when they are alone.

So the lesson is not "do not pray". It is: pray for Allah, not for an audience — and let your prayer make you a kinder person.

🕌 Pray for Allah
❤️ And be kind to people

🌙 Caring for Orphans

The very first thing this surah mentions is the orphan — a child whose father has passed away. Islam cares about orphans enormously, and the Prophet ﷺ was an orphan himself.

He ﷺ said that the person who looks after an orphan will be with him in Paradise like two fingers side by side. So never leave a child out, and never be unkind to someone who has less than you.

1

Ara'aytal-ladhee yukadhdhibu bid-deen

"Have you seen the one who denies the Judgment?"

Allah begins with a question, like saying "shall I show you someone?" — it makes you lean in and listen. This person does not really believe that one day everyone will stand before Allah and answer for what they did.

2

Fadhalikal-ladhee yadu''ul-yateem

"That is the one who drives away the orphan."

Here is how you can tell: he pushes the orphan away instead of helping. If you truly believed Allah was watching and would ask you about it, could you ever be harsh to a child who has nobody?

3

Wa la yahuddu 'ala ta'amil-miskeen

"And does not encourage the feeding of the poor."

Look closely — it does not only say he refuses to feed the poor. It says he does not even encourage others to do it! So if you cannot help yourself, you can still remind someone else. Even that counts.

4

Fawaylul-lil-musalleen

"So woe to those who pray."

Wait — a warning for people who pray? Do not stop here! In the Quran this verse and the next belong together. Keep reading to find out which praying people are meant.

5

Alladheena hum 'an salatihim sahoon

"Those who are heedless of their prayer."

There it is! Sahoon means careless and forgetful — people who do not care about their salah, who delay it until it is nearly gone, or rush through without a thought for Allah.

6

Alladheena hum yura'oon

"Those who make a show of it."

This is called riya — doing good just so people will see you. Pray because Allah is watching, not because your friends are. Allah looks at your heart, not at how impressive you look.

7

Wa yamna'oonal-ma'oon

"And they withhold small kindnesses."

The surah ends with the tiniest things: lending a pencil, sharing a rubber, passing someone a cup of water. If your heart is too small to give those away, something has gone wrong inside it.
