Surah Quraysh

The Quraysh - قريش

📿 4 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 🍽️ Food and Safety

🌟 Why is Surah Quraysh Special?

Surah Quraysh is chapter number 106 of the Quran, and it is only 4 verses long.

"Quraysh" was the name of the big, important tribe of Makkah — the tribe the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself was born into.

This surah is a gentle reminder from Allah. It says: look at all the good things you have — who do you think gave them to you?

🐫 The Two Great Journeys

Makkah sits in a dry valley with no rivers and no farms. So how did anybody live there? Through trade!

Twice a year, the Quraysh loaded up their camels and travelled with huge caravans:

  • ❄️ In winter they journeyed south to Yemen, where it was warm
  • ☀️ In summer they journeyed north to Syria, where it was cooler

They came home with food, cloth and everything they needed. And here is the amazing part: the roads were full of robbers, but nobody ever attacked the Quraysh — because everyone respected them as the people who looked after the Kaaba. Allah kept them safe.

🕋 The Surah That Comes After the Elephant

Surah Quraysh follows straight on from Surah Al-Fil, the story of the elephant army that came to destroy the Kaaba — and was stopped by little birds carrying stones.

The two surahs fit together like two halves of one sentence. Al-Fil says: Allah protected the Kaaba. Quraysh says: and that is why you are safe, and why your caravans travel in peace.

So Allah is saying: you have already seen what I did for you. Now worship Me alone!

🐘 Al-Fil: Allah protected you
🐫 Quraysh: so worship Him

🍽️ Two Blessings You Might Forget

At the end, Allah names just two gifts: He fed them from hunger and made them safe from fear.

Stop and think about those. Did you eat today? Do you feel safe in your home tonight? Most people never even notice these two blessings — but they are the two biggest things anybody has. Say Alhamdulillah for them!

1

لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ

Li'eelafi Quraysh

"For the familiarity of the Quraysh."

Eelaf is a beautiful word. It means being used to something safe and comfortable — a routine you can count on. The Quraysh were so used to their safe journeys that they stopped noticing how special it was.

2

إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ

Eelafihim rihlatash-shita'i was-sayf

"Their familiarity with the journey of winter and summer."

Two trips, every single year, like clockwork. Shita' means winter and sayf means summer — two easy words to remember! Nobody robbed them and nobody stopped them, year after year.

3

فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتِ

Falya'budoo Rabba hadhal-bayt

"So let them worship the Lord of this House."

Here is the whole point of the surah, in one line. "This House" means the Kaaba. Allah does not say "worship the House" — He says worship the Lord of the House. Only Allah is worshipped, never a building.

4

الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُمْ مِنْ جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُمْ مِنْ خَوْفٍ

Alladhee at'amahum min joo'in wa amanahum min khawf

"Who has fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear."

Two gifts, named side by side: food and safety. A full tummy and a peaceful heart. If you have both of those today, you have more than you realize — Alhamdulillah!

💬 Noticing What You Already Have

The Quraysh had food and safety every day of their lives, and because it never stopped, they stopped seeing it. That is what eelaf does — good things become normal, and normal things become invisible.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Whoever among you wakes up safe in his home, healthy in his body, and has his food for the day, it is as if he has been given the whole world."
