Surah An-Nasr

📿 3 Verses 🕌 Madani Surah 📖 The Last Surah Revealed

🌟 Why is Surah An-Nasr Special?

Surah An-Nasr is chapter number 110 of the Quran, and it is only 3 verses long.

"An-Nasr" means the help and victory that comes from Allah. Not victory you win by being strong or clever — victory that Allah gives you.

This surah is very special for another reason: many scholars say it was the last complete surah ever revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

🕌 The Day Makkah Opened

Remember what the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims went through in Makkah? They were hurt, mocked and treated so badly that they had to leave their own city and move to Madinah.

Years later they returned — and Makkah opened its gates without a battle. This is called the Conquest of Makkah, the day Allah's help arrived.

So what did the Prophet ﷺ do on his day of victory? Did he take revenge on the people who had hurt him?

  • 💫 He entered with his head bowed low in thanks to Allah
  • 💫 He told the people: "Go, you are free."
  • 💫 He forgave even those who had been cruellest to him

😢 Why Some Companions Cried

When this surah came down, everybody was happy — Allah's help had arrived! But one companion, Ibn Abbas, understood something hidden inside it, and it made him sad.

The surah tells the Prophet ﷺ to praise Allah and ask forgiveness. That is what a person does when their work is finished. Ibn Abbas realized it was a gentle sign that the Prophet's mission was complete, and that he would soon leave this world.

He was right. The Prophet ﷺ passed away not long after. That is why this little surah feels both joyful and tender at the same time.

🕊️ Victory arrived
🤲 And the mission was complete

🌙 What You Do When You Win

Think about what happens when you win a game, come first in a test, or get something you really wanted. What is the first thing you feel like doing? Showing off, maybe?

This surah teaches the opposite. When something good happens, you: praise Allah, thank Him, and ask His forgiveness — because the good thing came from Him, not from you.

1

إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ

Idha ja'a nasrullahi wal-fath

"When the help of Allah and the victory come."

Look at whose help it is — Allah's help! The Muslims did not win because they had the biggest army. They won because Allah helped them. Al-Fath means "the opening", because Makkah opened its gates to them.

2

وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا

Wa ra'aytan-nasa yadkhuloona fee deenillahi afwaja

"And you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds."

Afwaja means in big groups, crowd after crowd! At the start only a handful of people believed, and they had to hide it. Now whole families were becoming Muslim together. Allah had turned it all around.

3

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا

Fasabbih bihamdi Rabbika wastaghfirh, innahu kana tawwaba

"Then glorify the praises of your Lord and ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance."

Here is the surprise! After a great victory Allah does not say "celebrate". He says say SubhanAllah, say Alhamdulillah, and say Astaghfirullah. And He reminds us that He is Tawwab — always ready to forgive, no matter what.

After this surah was revealed, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) noticed that the Prophet ﷺ said one phrase again and again — in his bowing and his prostration.

He would say: "Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahummaghfir li" — "Glory be to You, O Allah our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me."
