Surah Al-Asr

Time - العصر

📿 3 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 🗝️ The Recipe for Success

🌟 Why is Surah Al-Asr Special?

Surah Al-Asr is chapter number 103 of the Quran, and it is only 3 verses long — one of the shortest surahs of all.

"Al-Asr" means time — the time that keeps ticking past and never comes back. Allah swears by time at the start of this surah, and when Allah swears by something, He is telling us: pay attention, this matters!

In three tiny lines, this surah gives you the whole recipe for a successful life. Imam ash-Shafi'i said that if Allah had revealed only this surah, it would have been enough guidance for people.

🗝️ The Four Ingredients of Success

Allah says every single person is losing out... except those who do four things:

  • 💫 Believe in Allah
  • 💫 Do good deeds — believing is not enough, we must act
  • 💫 Remind each other of the truth
  • 💫 Remind each other to be patient

Notice the last two are about other people! You are not meant to be good all alone — you help your family and friends be good too.

👋 The Companions' Goodbye

Here is a beautiful habit of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. When two of them met and it was time to go their separate ways, they would not simply say goodbye.

Instead, one would recite Surah Al-Asr to the other, and only then would they part.

Why? Because it reminded them both, one more time: time is running out — let us keep believing, keep doing good, and keep helping each other. Try it with a friend or your brother or sister!

⏳ Time is short
🤝 So help each other

🧊 Time is Like Ice

A wise teacher once said: time is like a block of ice. Whether you use it or not, it keeps melting away!

Every minute you spend today will never come back. That is why Allah swears by time — so you spend it on things that count: your salah, your family, learning, and being kind.

1

وَالْعَصْرِ

Wal-'Asr

"By time!"

This is the shortest verse you will learn — just one word! Allah swears by time itself. Only Allah may swear by His creation, and He does it to make us stop and listen. Something important is coming next...

2

إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ

Innal-insana lafee khusr

"Indeed, mankind is in loss."

Khusr means loss — like losing something precious. Every day that passes, a piece of your life is spent. If you did not use it for something good, it is gone forever. That sounds scary... but wait for the next verse!

3

إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ

Illal-ladheena amanoo wa 'amilus-salihati wa tawasaw bil-haqqi wa tawasaw bis-sabr

"Except those who believe, and do righteous deeds, and advise each other to truth, and advise each other to patience."

Here is the way out! "Except" — these four things save you: believe, do good, tell each other the truth, and help each other be patient. Do these, and your time is never wasted.
