Surah Az-Zalzalah

The Earthquake -

📿 8 Verses 🕌 Madani Surah ⚖️ Every Tiny Deed Counts

🌟 Why is Surah Az-Zalzalah Special?

Surah Az-Zalzalah is chapter number 99 of the Quran, with 8 verses.

"Zalzalah" means a great shaking — an earthquake. The surah describes the Day the whole earth shakes, and then does something surprising: it speaks.

It ends with two of the most quoted lines in the whole Quran — about a weight so small you can barely imagine it.

🗣️ The Day the Earth Speaks

Imagine the ground under your feet telling everything it saw. Every kind thing done on it. Every unkind one.

The Prophet ﷺ explained that the earth will tell what every person did on its surface. That is what the surah means when it says the earth will report its news.

  • 🌍 The ground remembers
  • 🗣️ And one Day it will speak
  • 💫 So make it a good story

⚖️ Smaller Than You Can See

The last two verses use the word dharrah — the tiniest thing the Arabs could name. A speck of dust in a sunbeam. An ant so small you would miss it.

And Allah says: even that much good will be seen. Even that much bad will be seen.

So the small kind thing nobody noticed — Allah noticed. And the small unkind thing you thought was too little to matter — that counts too.

✨ No good is too small
⚠️ No wrong is too small

🌙 The Verse to Remember Tonight

If a child learns only one line from this surah, let it be the seventh: whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it.

It means the glass of water you fetched, the toy you shared, the smile you gave when you did not feel like it — none of it is lost. Not one bit of it.

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

1

Idha zulzilatil-ardu zilzalaha

"When the earth is shaken with its final earthquake."

Not an ordinary earthquake — its own earthquake, the one the earth was always going to have. The whole ground, everywhere, at once.

2

Wa akhrajatil-ardu athqalaha

"And the earth brings out its burdens."

Everything the earth has been holding inside comes out. Nothing stays buried on that Day.

3

Wa qalal-insanu ma laha

"And man says, 'What is wrong with it?'"

A very human moment: people look around and ask what is happening to the earth? Even then, Allah records the question we ask.

4

Yawma-idhin tuhaddithu akhbaraha

"That Day it will report its news."

Here is the surprise of the surah. The earth talks. It tells what happened on it — every single thing, from every single person.

5

Bi-anna Rabbaka awha laha

"Because your Lord has inspired it."

The earth does not speak on its own — Allah tells it to. Everything obeys Him, even the ground.

6

Yawma-idhin yasdurun-nasu ashtatal-liyuraw a'malahum

"That Day people will come forward in groups to be shown their deeds."

Not to be told about their deeds — to be shown them. You will see what you did, like watching it again.

7

Faman ya'mal mithqala dharratin khayran yarah

"So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it."

The most hopeful line in the surah. Nothing good is ever wasted — not the smallest kindness, not the one nobody saw.

8

Wa man ya'mal mithqala dharratin sharran yarah

"And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."

And the other half, which makes us careful: the small unkind thing counts too. Not to frighten you — to remind you that you matter enough to be counted.
