Surah Al-Fil

The Elephant -

📿 5 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 🐦 The Little Birds

🌟 Why is Surah Al-Fil Special?

Surah Al-Fil is chapter number 105 of the Quran, and it has 5 short verses.

"Al-Fil" means the elephant. It tells the story of an army that marched on Makkah with elephants to destroy the Kaaba — and what Allah sent to stop them.

It happened in the year the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born, so Arabs called that year "the Year of the Elephant".

🐘 The Army That Never Arrived

A powerful ruler named Abraha built a grand church far away, and he was angry that people still travelled to Makkah to visit the Kaaba. So he decided to knock it down.

He came with a huge army and elephants — animals the people of Makkah had never even seen. Nobody could have stopped him. So what did Allah send?

  • 🐦 Not an army — small birds
  • 🪨 Not swords — little stones
  • 💫 And that was more than enough

✨ The Smallest Thing Allah Chooses

Think about how strange this is. The biggest animal anyone knew was stopped by the smallest birds anyone knew.

Allah did not need anything big. When Allah decides something, the size of it does not matter at all — a small bird carrying a small stone is enough.

So never think you are too small to matter, and never think a problem is too big for Allah.

🕋 Allah Protects His House

The Kaaba's own caretaker, Abdul-Muttalib — the Prophet's grandfather — said something beautiful when Abraha came: "The House has a Lord who will protect it."

He was right. He did not have to fight; he only had to trust. And this surah is why the very next one, Surah Quraysh, says the people of Makkah were kept safe.

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

1

Alam tara kayfa fa'ala Rabbuka bi-as-habil-feel

"Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?"

Allah begins with a question — have you not seen? — as if to say: look at this, everyone knows it happened. Ashab al-fil means "the people of the elephant", the army that came to destroy the Kaaba.

2

Alam yaj'al kaydahum fee tadleel

"Did He not make their plan go astray?"

They had a careful plan, and Allah simply made it lose its way. All that preparation, and it came to nothing at all.

3

Wa arsala 'alayhim tayran ababeel

"And He sent against them birds in flocks."

Ababeel means flock after flock — wave upon wave of birds filling the sky. Not soldiers. Birds.

4

Tarmeehim bihijaratim-min sijjeel

"Striking them with stones of baked clay."

Each bird carried small stones of hard baked clay. Small stones — but sent by Allah, and that is what made them unstoppable.

5

Faja'alahum ka'asfim-ma'kool

"And He made them like eaten straw."

A picture a child can see: chewed-up straw, the dry leftovers in a field after animals have eaten. The mighty army ended up looking like that.
