Surah Al-Kawthar

The Abundance - الكوثر

📿 3 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 🏆 The Shortest Surah

🌟 Why is Surah Al-Kawthar Special?

Surah Al-Kawthar is chapter number 108, and it is the shortest surah in the entire Quran — only 3 verses and just ten words!

"Al-Kawthar" means a huge amount of good — so much that you could never count it. It comes from the same Arabic root as the word kathir, which means "a lot".

This is the perfect surah to learn if you have never memorized one before. You can do it today!

💔 A Sad Day Turned Happy

The Prophet ﷺ was going through a very hard time. His baby son had passed away, and one unkind man began mocking him, saying he was "abtar" — cut off, with nobody to remember him.

Imagine how much that would hurt. So Allah revealed this little surah to comfort His Prophet ﷺ, and it told him three things:

  • 💫 You have been given so much good, more than you can count
  • 💫 So pray and give — thank Allah for it
  • 💫 The one who mocks you is the one who will be forgotten

And it came true! Billions of people say "ﷺ" after the Prophet's name every day — and nobody remembers the name of the man who mocked him.

🌊 The River in Jannah

The Prophet ﷺ told us that Al-Kawthar is also the name of a river in Paradise that Allah has given him.

He described it: its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Its banks are made of gold, and its stones are pearls. And here is the best part — whoever drinks from it will never, ever feel thirsty again.

The Prophet ﷺ will be standing at that river welcoming his ummah. Will you be one of them, in shaa Allah?

🥛 Whiter than milk
🍯 Sweeter than honey

🤲 What This Teaches You

When someone says something unkind to you, remember Surah Al-Kawthar. You do not need to shout back or be mean in return.

Instead: count your blessings, thank Allah, pray, and be generous. Allah takes care of the rest — just as He did for His Prophet ﷺ.

1

إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ

Inna a'taynaka al-Kawthar

"Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar (abundance)."

Allah says: We have given you — already done, it is yours! Al-Kawthar means so much goodness you could never finish counting it: the Quran, the river in Jannah, and blessings beyond imagining.

2

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ

Fasalli li Rabbika wanhar

"So pray to your Lord and sacrifice."

Notice the word "so"! Allah gave you so much, so say thank you. And how do we say thank you? Two ways: pray to Allah, and give to others — like the sacrifice families share on Eid al-Adha.

3

إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ

Inna shani'aka huwal-abtar

"Indeed, the one who hates you — he is the one cut off."

The man called the Prophet ﷺ "abtar" — cut off and forgotten. Allah answered: no, you are the one who will be forgotten! Today the whole world loves and remembers the Prophet ﷺ. Allah always defends those who are His.
