Surah Al-Masad

The Palm Fibre - المسد

📿 5 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah 🛡️ Allah Defends His Prophet

🌟 Why is Surah Al-Masad Special?

Surah Al-Masad is chapter number 111 of the Quran, and it has 5 short verses.

The word "Al-Masad" means a rope twisted from palm fibre. This is the only surah in the Quran that names one particular person who fought against the Prophet ﷺ.

It is a surah about one simple thing: what you own does not matter — what you choose does.

👨‍👦 The Uncle Who Chose to Be Unkind

Abu Lahab had everything a person might want. He was the Prophet's own uncle — his family — and he was rich and important in Makkah.

But he chose to use all of it to hurt his own nephew. He would follow the Prophet ﷺ to call him a liar in front of people, and he and his wife tried to harm him.

So Allah revealed this surah, and it says three things:

  • 💫 Allah defends His Prophet — he was never alone
  • 💫 Money protects nobody from the result of their own choices
  • 💫 Being family is not enough — what you do is what counts

✨ The Promise He Could Never Disprove

Here is something remarkable. This surah came down while Abu Lahab was still alive, and it said he would not believe.

Think about that. If he had wanted to prove the Quran wrong, all he had to do was say "I am a Muslim" — even pretending. He had years to try it.

He never did. The surah stayed true — a small miracle that anybody could check.

🌙 What You Take From This Surah

This surah is not about being frightened. It is about choosing. Abu Lahab had money, status, and a close family tie to the best of people — and he still chose to be cruel.

So if someone is unkind to you, remember: Allah sees, and Allah defends those who are His. And if you want to be one of them, choose kindness on the days when it would be easy not to.

1

Tabbat yada Abi Lahabin wa tabb

"May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, and may he perish."

"Hands" here means everything he did and everything he earned. All his effort to hurt the Prophet ﷺ came to nothing. Abu Lahab was a nickname meaning "father of flame" — he was given it because his face was so bright and handsome.

2

Ma aghna 'anhu maluhu wa ma kasab

"His wealth and what he earned did not help him."

He was one of the richest men in Makkah, and none of it helped him. Money cannot buy Allah's pleasure. That is worth thinking about whenever we imagine that things make us better.

3

Sayasla naran dhata lahab

"He will enter a Fire of blazing flame."

This is the result of his own choice. Notice the word: lahab, flame — the very word in his nickname. The name he was proud of became the description of where his choices led. Allah is just: nobody is answerable for anything but what they chose.

4

Wamra'atuhu hammalatal-hatab

"And his wife, the carrier of firewood."

His wife helped him in his unkindness, putting thorns in the Prophet's path. Carrier of firewood also describes someone who carries talk between people to set them against each other — like carrying wood to feed a fire.

5

Fee jeediha hablum-mim-masad

"Around her neck is a rope of palm fibre."

Masad is the rough rope twisted from palm fibre, and it gives the surah its name. She wore an expensive necklace she was proud of; the Quran mentions a rough rope instead of jewels — what we show off with today counts for nothing with Allah.
